I believe that Key, Brownlee, Groser, Joyce et al are very aware that what they're doing is destructive to NZ, but they have different priorities. In 2008 they knew that National would probably only last 2 terms, so they spent the first term setting things up and will spend the second term feathering their nests by setting things up for companies like Holcim, Carter Holt, Fonterra etc. Key (and some of his minions) will either resign in 2014 or soon after the election to "pursue other interests" with the support of the organisations they have served so well.

I believe that they see people like you and I as sentimentalists.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263129089232513980.post-79604763529534701962012-10-06T22:36:18.546+10:002012-10-06T22:36:18.546+10:00@Anonymous, I showed you my data sources. The ANZ data is erroneous and is a monthly average. The coking coal market has two mechanisms for price. Quarterly pricing and spot. Spot pricing for hard coking coal dropped from US$226 on 25 June 2012 to US$140 today. Taking into account a rising US/NZ dollar over this time is a 41% drop is effective pricing (ignoring the discount for freight and quality variations from the premium Australian coal brands).
Semi-soft coal typically obtains a price that is 65 to 70% of the hard-coking coal price. At present the price of semi-soft coal is US$115 - equating to NZ$140 (rounded up) - some $40 below the cost position for Spring Creek.

I think the facts are that the price has substantially fallen in the last 3-months which has equating with US suppliers reducing production by some 10mt of export coals and major Australian producers (e.g. BHP) closing mines and reducing major investment.

While the strategy to diversify away from coal may not have been executed effectively - I think the facts in the market are obvious...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263129089232513980.post-43125969427003119002012-08-10T15:51:03.470+10:002012-08-10T15:51:03.470+10:00Won;t it be financial fun when Australian ETS unit...Won;t it be financial fun when Australian ETS units enter the market. If they can just reduce the "Range anxiety" problem of batteries.

Laboratory experiments have made short term 10x improvements in battery capacity and repeatable longer 3x improvements, translated to weight reduction or range improvement can make all the difference.

So far fossil fuels are still the primary source of electric car power, but the greater energy efficiency of electric motors still allows electrics to come out slightly ahead. It's a bit of a chicken and egg issue, should clean electricity sources come before adopting scaling up electric car technology.

It looks like China may end up the leader in electric car production, better work on those language skills.

It's said that large scale electric generation plants operate at only one speed, producing a surplus of power during off peak hours, perhaps the number of electric cars to absorb that surplus during overnight recharges would be the ideal number of them to have.

__________________________
Atty.
